Note: This locomotive is fitted with a low speed control system, the speedometer mounted at the left side of the cab has a range of 0 - 3 MPH.
Locomotives fitted with this low speed system were used on MGR (Merry Go Round) workings, delivering bulk coal loads to power stations.
Continuous steady low speed is required for discharging long trains of bulk hopper wagons into the reception chambers below the running rails.

CLASS 33 LOCOMOTIVE NOTES
BRCW Type 3 D6500 was British Rail's first Type 3 locomotive in use and the first locomotive fitted with ETH (Electric Train Heating) entering service in December 1959.
Locomotives D6501 - D6585 were built from 1960 - 1962 These were all allocated to Hither Green and used on the Southern Region.
Locomotives D6586 - D6597 were built to a narrow loading guage to suit the Hastings to Tunbridge Wells route and became Sub class 33/2.
In 1965/1967 Nineteen locos were fitted with high level jumpers, three piece end handrails, gangway vestibule rubbing plates, drophead buckeye couplers, large diameter retractable Oleo buffers and electrical control gear for Push-Pull working over the non electrified mainline from Bournemouth to Weymouth. The tail lights were also removed as the red headcode blinds were considered to be sufficient. A small socket was also fitted to the cab fronts to power the warning bell and flashing light used for working boat trains along the line on Weymouth Quay
1967-1988 The Branksome - Weymouth push-pull workings with 4 TC and SR EMU sets operated until 1988 when the third rail electrification was extended from Branksome to Weymouth and the Class 442 Wessex Electrics were introduced.
All 98 locomotives entered service in BR green livery with light grey roof and off white window surrounds with a 3 inch wide off white stripe along the middle of the body sides which extended round the cab fronts. D65xx numbers were carried below all four cab side windows.
From 1962 to 1968 yellow warning panels were added to all members of the class.
In 1968 / 1969 all class members except two were repainted in allover BR blue with full yellow ends. D6502 was withdrawn in May 1964 and scrapped in July 1964 still in original green livery. D6576 was withdrawn in November 1968 and scrapped in March 1969 carrying green livery with half-height yellow warning panel.

The Mighty Deltic
Deltic transferring from yard to run-round loop at Bo'Ness
British Railways Class 55 diesel locomotives were built by English Electric during 1961 - 1962. These locos are known as 'Deltics' after the Napier Deltic engines that give the class 55 locos their distinctive sound. The class 55s were designed for East Coast Main Line express passenger services between Edinburgh and London. They were also operated extensively on high speed passenger services between Leeds and London.
From 1978 until 1981 the ECML high speed passenger services were gradually taken over by Class 43 InterCity 125 HST trains and the Deltics were used for working semi-fast passenger services, sleeper trains, parcels and newspaper services.
The entire Class 55 fleet was withdrawn by December 1981 with three locos being kept back to work the 'Deltic Farewell Special' on 2nd January 1982.
There are 5 preserved Class 55 Deltics and 2 cabs preserved (One cab was used to create a driving simulator)

110 Army 0-4-0 Diesel Shunter
Using the cute little Diesel-Mechanical Ruston 0-4-0 shunter 'ARMY 110' to move a 'stuck' 0-6-0 diesel at Whitrope Siding.
After much beating with hammers (and a modicum of expletives) to release a jammed brake the little Ruston made easy work of shifting the 0-6-0.
This loco was brilliant fun to drive, all mechanical lever controlled clutch and gearbox transmission.
Last image shows the Overflow car park was a little over grown. Plenty more important jobs to do first.

Bo'Ness
Bo'Ness is the home of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society. Located on the South banks of the River Forth near Edinburgh.
Bo'Ness is an excellent place to visit. Fully operational signal box, semaphore signalling, lovely footbridge,
restored yard crane and a nice collection of motive power.

High current load testing during power supply upgrade works on the Waterloo - Weymouth route.
Some big modifications in small scales.
With a couple of restorations, more subtle modifications, and works in progress thrown in for good measure.
Building layouts in small spaces calls for smaller scales.
Finding space for a model railway layout can often be a problem, especially in modern 'rabbit hutch' sized houses and flats.
British 'N-Gauge' 1:148th scale is about half the size of the common 'OO/HO' models, this means a given trackplan can be fitted into half of the space needed for the same track plan in OO scale.. If you have enough room for a OO layout, You can get twice as much stuff on an N-gauge layout in the same space.
N-gauge (sometimes called N-scale) track uses 9mm gauge track (9mm spacing between the rails) If You limit the locos and rolling stock to short wheelbase tank engines, goods stock etc the minimum space for a short train reliable workable 'loop-back' curve is 18 inches (about 460mm) If You intend to haul passenger coaches, operate DMUs or run long bodied bogie locos the minimum workable space for a loopback is about 38 inches. (about 980mm)
A simple 'Dogbone' loop arrangement with Loopback curve boards in the corners of a room and a narrow shelf along the wall between them can be used to model strip of countryside with a section of 'twin track mainline' where You can set the trains running, sit back and enjoy. Of course for a bit more fun shunting You can add sidings or a 'passing loop' line with a slightly wider shelf, or make a wider section above a bookcase or in a window ledge recess to accommodate goods sidings or a small station.

Hammant & Morgan N/474 DUETTE Twin PSU
Re-discovered a Hammant & Morgan DUETTE twin supply power unit while hunting down parts for something else. It was hiding under a yellow duster under a bunch of cables, under a small shunting layout in 'the engine shed'.
The N/474 DUETTE has individual 'A' and 'B' outputs. (1A each) Manual control of polarity and voltage with Low/High Impedance and Half/Full wave rectification switches for each output. Also provides constant 16V AC and 12V DC through the 'sockets' on both case sides.
A Classic 'train controller' with many uses.

Train detection. The key to automatic signalling.
Reliable train detection is a basic requirement for automatic signalling and/or traction current control systems.
The original 'Stoneybridge N-Gauge, 1:148 scale layout, fixed to the walls & floor (and Stoneybridge West extrension) were fitted with automatic train detection and type recognition.
The entire layout could be operated manually using the mechanical control rods and switches for electro-mechanical signalling. All locos (up to four in separate sections of layout) individually manually controlled.
With the layout 'Switched Over' to 'mainline exhibition mode' The up and down main lines automatically deal with trains 'sent off' from manually shunted sidings and the Stoneybridge West reception sidings. Once on the mainline, trains will run automatically until a manual signal or point operation affecting the mainline is made. Trains can also be 'taken off' the main line and halted in the station loops or West yard reception siding without interrupting other mainline traffic.
When operating the layout in exhibition mode, train type detection is used to allow goods services to pass through Stoneybridge West station unimpeded and passenger services to be signaled, brought to a halt and held at the station.
After a pre-set time delay the signalling will clear, traction current will be applied and the train will continue its journey automatically.
Setting up automatic train detection, block signalling and locomotive control It is actually much easier than it sounds. :-)
